CardputerZero: turning an open hardware platform into a launch backed by 13,644 people
We worked with M5Stack to connect product positioning, prelaunch reservations, segmented emails and community engagement. CardputerZero passed US$1 million in its first 24 hours and reached 13,644 campaign backers.

Give technical breadth a clear buying reason
CardputerZero brings portable computing, development interfaces and hardware expansion into a compact device. That breadth gives makers room to experiment, but a new visitor still needs a simple answer: what would I use it for?
We framed the product around portable development and maker expansion. Linux experiments, hardware connections and creative projects gave developers and hardware enthusiasts specific ways to imagine using it. The campaign could then explain additional features through those tasks.
Connect the first demonstration to the next action
A small computer can attract attention without creating purchase intent. We organized the prelaunch page around recognizable activities and made the next action clear. Visitors could join the mailing list or make a US$1 reservation.
These actions served different purposes. A subscriber needed more context; a reservation holder was ready for more direct launch information. Separating the two groups helped us match the message to the decision they were making.
Prepare demand before the campaign opens
We connected prelaunch content, reservations and segmented emails with the launch schedule. The product message stayed consistent as a visitor moved from discovery to the campaign page. M5Stack’s hardware ecosystem and maker community gave that message a strong foundation.
Prelaunch advertising spend was below US$10,000. The campaign passed US$1 million in its first 24 hours and reached about US$1.56 million by day ten.
Make community response part of the launch
Open hardware buyers want to discuss compatibility, possible projects and future extensions. We treated those conversations as part of the product experience. Clear updates and timely replies helped people understand what they could expect.
During a discussion about the transparent black shell, the team revised the arrangement and provided it free to the relevant early backers. Responding with a concrete action protected the relationship with people who had supported the project early.
Build a launch that can support the product after day one
CardputerZero finished with HK$14,960,226 in pledges, approximately US$1.91 million, and 13,644 backers. The broader opportunity was to connect an understandable entry point with an ecosystem that users could keep exploring.
For a maker or AI hardware team, we start with the task people want to complete. We then connect demonstrations, prelaunch testing, content, paid media and launch communication around that buying reason.
